Oasis Scholars · At school

School is free.
Staying there is not.

Under the Government’s fee-free basic education policy, there are no tuition fees in public primary and lower-secondary schools. Families still buy uniforms, shoes, exercise books and stationery, and for many those costs decide whether a child keeps going. Oasis Scholars covers them for a full year.

Why it matters

What holds children back

  • A child without a proper uniform or shoes may stay at home rather than go to school.
  • Exercise books and stationery run out halfway through the year.
  • Without someone checking in, a struggling student quietly stops coming.

What it pays for

  • Two school uniforms and a sweater
  • School shoes and socks
  • A school bag
  • Exercise books, pens, pencils and a mathematical set for the year
  • Revision books for the national examinations
  • A mentor who follows the scholar’s attendance and progress

How it works

Careful, local and recorded.

Chosen with the school and local leaders

Teachers put forward children who are doing well but at risk of leaving because of cost. We confirm each family’s situation with the street or village leaders before a place is offered.

Bought for the child, not cash

Uniforms, shoes and books are bought from local suppliers and handed over at school or at home. Families are never given cash.

Within the fee-free policy

We do not pay tuition or any contribution the Government’s fee-free policy does not allow. We cover what families are expected to provide.

Followed through the year

A teacher or trained mentor keeps an eye on each scholar’s attendance and results, and tells us early if something is wrong.

What we look for

What success looks like

  • Scholars attend school regularly
  • Every scholar sits the national examinations for their level
  • Scholars move up a class each year

Questions

How are Oasis Scholars chosen?

With the school and the local street or village leaders. Teachers put forward students who are doing well but are at risk of leaving because of cost, and we confirm the family’s situation. Places go to need, never to who a family knows.

Do families receive money?

No. We buy uniforms, shoes and books from local suppliers and hand them over. Nothing is given as cash.

Can I sponsor one particular child?

Yes, you can fund one scholar’s place for a year and receive a private progress card on that scholar every school term. To protect the child we do not share full names, addresses or the school’s name, and we do not arrange private contact. How we report to donors.

Together we can change lives.

A uniform, a hot meal, a health card, a book, a bed. Small things that change a child’s life.
